Harsh Hit

When your vape tastes harsh, it means that the vapour you are inhaling feels rough, bitter, or unpleasant on your throat and lungs. This sensation is referred to as a harsh hit, and it is caused by many different factors that we are going to explore.

Reasons Your Vape Feels Harsh

Let's discuss the main reasons why you may be experiencing a harsh hit while vaping.

Empty Tank or Pod

If your tank or pod is empty, it can cause your vape to feel harsh. When there is no e-liquid or vape juice left to vaporise, the coils heat up and burn the wicking material, resulting in a dry hit that can feel harsh on your throat.

To resolve this issue, simply refill your tank or pod with your preferred e-liquid to ensure a smooth and enjoyable vaping experience.

High Nicotine Strength

E-liquids come in various nicotine strengths. The right amount mainly depends on your nicotine tolerance and vaping habits. However, it's important to remember that higher nicotine strength in your vape juice can cause your vape to feel harsh. Stronger levels of nicotine also result in a more intense throat hit. If you are transitioning from smoking, you can base the strength on the number of cigarettes you would typically smoke in a day.

For example:

  • 0-3mg of nicotine is suitable for light smokers who would smoke just a few cigarettes per day.
  • 6mg of nicotine is suitable for people that would smoke close to a pack per day.
  • 12mg of nicotine is suitable for smokers who would normally smoke a pack of cigarettes during the day.
  • 18mg of nicotine is suitable for heavy smokers who would easily smoke more then a pack of cigarettes per day.

So, if your vape feels harsh due to high nicotine strength, consider switching to a lower nicotine level for a smoother and more enjoyable vaping experience.

VG/PG ratio

The VG/PG ratio refers to the ratio of vegetable glycerin (VG) to propylene glycol (PG) present in the e-liquid. This ratio affects the viscosity, cloud production, flavour intensity, and throat hit of your chosen e-liquid.

A higher VG concentration results in denser clouds, smoother vapour and less throat hit, making it ideal for sub-ohm vaping and cloud chasing. On the other hand, a higher PG concentration provides a stronger throat hit and more flavour intensity.

If your vape feels harsh due to the VG/PG ratio, consider trying e-liquids with different ratios to find the one that suits your preferences best. Ideally, choose a vape juice with a higher VG ratio. For example, a 70VG/30PG may be a good option for you to achieve a smoother vaping experience.

The Wattage Settings Are Too High

Another factor that can play a role in getting a harsh hit is the wattage settings on your vaping device. If your wattage settings are too high, it burns the e-liquid faster at higher temperatures, intensifying the nicotine hit and causing harshness.

Disposable vapes usually operate between 5W to 20W, while advanced vape mods can reach up to 230W.

To achieve a smoother throat hit, play with your device's wattage and voltage settings until you find the right balance.

Burnt Coils

Burnt coils can cause harshness in your vape due to the unpleasant taste and smell generated when the wicking material is burned. Every experienced vaper can probably recognise the distinctive flavour of a burnt coil.

To address this issue, it is essential to regularly change your coils to prevent this unpleasant experience and ensure a smooth and flavourful vaping session.

Wrong Airflow Settings

Airflow settings on your vaping device control the amount of air that mixes with the vapour during inhalation. Proper airflow settings are essential for a smooth and enjoyable vaping experience.

Opening the airflow allows more air to enter the vape, resulting in a cooler and smoother hit. On the other hand, closing the airflow restricts the air intake, leading to a warmer and denser hit. If your vape feels harsh, adjust the airflow settings to find the right balance for your preferences and vaping style.

How to Avoid a Harsh Throat Hit?

To avoid a harsh throat hit, consider adjusting your wattage settings, changing your coils regularly, selecting the right nicotine strength, and ensuring proper airflow on your device. Experimenting with these factors can help in finding the perfect balance for a smoother vape.

Is It Normal for My Vape to Feel Harsh Sometimes?

Experiencing a harsh hit occasionally is common and can happen due to various reasons, such as high wattage, incorrect e-liquid ratio, or prolonged vaping sessions. Paying attention to maintenance and adjusting settings can help minimise the frequency of harsh hits for a more enjoyable experience.

Can E-liquid Cause a Harsh Hit?

The e-liquid composition can contribute to a harsh vaping experience. Choosing e-liquids that suit your preferences and vaping style can help reduce harshness.

Can Changing Your Vape Device Help Reduce Harsh Hits?

Switching to a different vaping device with adjustable settings for wattage, airflow, and coil options can potentially reduce harsh hits. Experimenting with a new device that better suits your vaping preferences may lead to a smoother inhale.

How Often Should I Change My Coils to Prevent Harsh Hits?

Regularly changing your coils, typically every 1-2 weeks depending on usage, can prevent burnt coils, which then lead to harsh hits. Overused coils can impact the flavour and smoothness of your vape, so their replacement is essential for a better vaping experience.
