Direct-to-Lung (DTL)

Have you ever come across the term DTL but wondered what exactly it means? Let us break it down for you as we explore what it entails, which vape kits are most suitable for this style of vaping, the best e-liquids to use, and the pros and cons of DTL vaping. Whether you're new to direct-to-lung vaping or just looking to level up your vaping experience, we will give you the information you need about this popular vaping technique.

What Is Direct-to-Lung Vaping?

Direct-to-Lung vaping, or DTL, is a vaping technique where the user inhales the vapour directly into their lungs in one continuous motion. This is in contrast to Mouth-to-Lung (MTL) vaping, where the vapour is first drawn into the mouth before being inhaled into the lungs.

This technique is often preferred by more experienced vapers who enjoy a warmer vapour and increased flavour intensity. DTL vaping is also popular among cloud chasers who enjoy creating impressive clouds of vapour.

To achieve this style of vaping, you need to slowly and steadily draw the vapour directly into your lungs (for about 3-5 seconds). It basically like taking a breath when you inhale the air directly into your lungs, only bypassing your mouth. And as soon as the vapour hits your lungs, you exhale.

Vape Kits for DTL Vaping

The thing is, you can't perform DTL vaping with just any device. There are a few factors that you need to take into consideration when choosing a vape kit that will be suitable. So, let's look at them.

  • You will need a sub-ohm vape kit with variable wattage. These devices typically run from 40 W up to 300 W. However, this doesn't mean you should set your device to the highest wattage! Going this high is quite unusual and is mostly used during competitions to perform tricks.
  • Let's talk coils for a second. Make sure you choose sub-ohm coils with a resistance below 1 ohm. These coils are made to withstand higher temperatures for longer without damaging your device and create warmer, more dense vapour clouds.
  • Having a device with adjustable airflow is also very important for DTL vaping. By opening up the airflow, you allow more air to flow through the tank into your lungs. More airflow = Bigger clouds. On the other hand, closing the airflow results in a more intense flavour. However, again, this doesn't mean you should open up your airflow to the maximum capacity. Instead, play with it to find your preferred setting and balance between cloud production and flavour intensity.
  • DTL vaping can drain your battery faster because of the higher wattages, so choose batteries with sufficient capacity to last you throughout the day.
  • Don't underestimate the safety features! Make sure your device has essential features like overheating protection and short circuit protection to avoid potential risks.

  • Which E-liquids Are the best for DTL Vaping?

The type of vape juice you choose can also affect your DTL vaping experience. As mentioned, DTL vaping means inhaling a larger amount of vapour into your lungs. That's why we would recommend choosing an e-liquid with lower nicotine content to avoid a harsh hit. Of course, you can also opt for nicotine-free liquids.

Many vapers go for shortfills that are nicotine-free and allow them to control the nicotine strength. They also come with either a 70/30 or an 80/20 VG/PG ratio that is ideal for cloud production and flavour delivery. However, make sure your coils can handle your chosen ratio. Some coils are made to handle only 70% VG and could struggle with 80% as the liquid is thicker.

We would recommend you to go for the 70/30 VG/PG ratio as this delivers a perfect amount of cloud production as well as a smoother throat hit.

Pros & Cons of DTL Vaping

Direct-to-Lung (DTL) vaping offers a unique and satisfying experience for vapers but also comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages:

    Pros

    • Increased cloud production, ideal for cloud chasers
    • Warmer vapour and more intense throat hit
    • Allows more customisation based on individual preferences
    • More intense flavours

    Cons

    • Higher e-liquid consumption due tue increased vapour production
    • There is a slight learning curve to master a DTL vaping style
    • The battery tends to drain faster

Are Disposable Vapes MTL or DTL?

Disposable vapes can be both MTL or DTL, depending on their design and airflow. Some disposable vapes are specifically designed for DTL vaping to produce larger clouds. However, generally speaking, disposables and starter kits are more suitable for MTL vaping style.

Does DTL Use More Vape Juice?

Yes, DTL vaping tends to use more vape juice compared to MTL vaping as the higher wattages and increased vapour production require frequent refills to maintain optimal performance.

Can I Use Nic Salt for DTL Vaping?

While nic salts are usually recommended for Mouth-to-Lung vaping due to their higher nicotine concentration and smoother throat hit, they can be used for DTL vaping depending on your preference and nicotine tolerance.

Is DTL Vaping better than MTL?

It's hard to say which vaping style is better, as it all comes down to your preference. Some vapers prefer the enhanced flavour and cloud production of DTL vaping, while others may enjoy the tighter draw of MTL vaping.

What gives more flavour? MTL or DTL?

DTL vaping typically gives more flavour intensity compared to MTL, as the direct inhalation into the lungs allows for a more pronounced taste sensation and greater vapour production.

    Is DTL Suitable for Beginners?

DTL vaping can be suitable for beginners who are open to learning about different vaping techniques and enjoy a more intense vaping experience. It requires some initial adjustments but can be rewarding in the end if you are looking to explore new vaping styles.

What Is the best Wattage for DTL vaping?

The best wattage varies depending on the device, coil resistance, and personal preference. It is recommended to start at lower wattages and gradually increase to find the optimal setting for your desired vapour production and flavour. The ideal starting point is at 40W, and you can always adjust it as you go.

What Is the best Ohm for DTL?

The best ohm for DTL vaping falls within the sub-ohm range (below 1 ohm) to accommodate higher wattages and increased vapour production. Sub-ohm coils are commonly used in DTL vaping for robust clouds and flavour.

What VG/PG Is the best for Direct-to-lung Vaping?

The ideal VG/PG ratio for DTL vaping is typically higher in VG (Vegetable Glycerin) content, around 70% VG, to produce dense clouds, enhance flavour, and provide a smooth inhale for a satisfying vaping experience.
