While vaping can be a simple pleasure, understanding the mechanics behind it can amplify your experience, giving you more control and enabling safer usage. 

What Are Amps?

Amps, short for Amperes, are used to measure the amount of electrical current. In terms of vaping, amps refer to the amount of current being drawn from the battery. Understanding the limits of your device can help you avoid pushing it beyond its limits, compromising your vape's performance, or damaging the battery.

Calculating Vape Amps

By calculating the amps of your vaping device, you can optimise your vaping experience and ensure the safety of your device. Knowing how many amps your device utilises can be crucial for several reasons:

  • The amp draw of your device can impact your battery life. High-amp vaping often results in shorter battery life, meaning you'll have to recharge your device more frequently. 
  • Different vapes and accessories, such as coils or tanks, can have different requirements when it comes to amps. Ensuring your device is compatible with these components is crucial to its performance. 
  • Create a balance between how many draws your coils are exerting on the battery. If the draw is over the battery capacity, it can lead to draining and eventual damage to the battery.
  • Most importantly, understanding and calculating your device's amps can help prevent instances that may potentially harm your device or, in worst-case scenarios, even lead to battery explosions.

Types of Vape Mods and Their Capacity

When it comes to Mods, there are two main categories: Mechanical Mods and Regulated Mods. Both of them have different characteristics and handle amps differently.

Mechanical Mods

These are the type of mods with no circuitry or electronic components. They’re essentially a tube that holds an external, replaceable battery, which supplies raw battery power directly to the atomiser. Mechanical mods require a higher understanding of Ohm's law and battery safety because of the absence of safety features. Their amp limit depends on the capabilities of the battery being used. 

Calculating the amp draw for a mechanical mod involves using Ohm's Law. By using the formula Amps = Voltage / Resistance, you can establish how many amps your vape will draw from the battery, knowing the voltage of your battery and the resistance of your coil.

For example, if you are vaping at around 10.5V with a 0.5 ohm coil, the equation will be:  10.5/0.5 = 21A.

Then, check if the battery you are using is rated at 21A or above. If yes, you are good to go, if not, you need to find another battery with a higher amperage.

Regulated Mods

These mods contain a protective circuit between the battery and the coil that regulates the current. They provide safety features that can protect against short-circuiting, low resistance, over-vaping and improper battery installation. Regulated mods automatically prevent the device from firing if the amp draw exceeds the safe battery limit. 

Calculating amp draw from a regulated mod is slightly different. You divide the power (in watts) that the device is set at, by the minimum voltage of your battery (usually around 3.2V). For example, if you're running a regulated mod at 80 watts with a single battery device, your amp draw would be calculated as Amps = 80W / 3.2V which is equal to about 25A.

If you have a 150W device with two batteries, it means that each battery bears 75W load. The minimum voltage is still 3.2V per battery. Therefore, the calculation would look something like this: 75W/3.2V = 23.4375 Amps

Why Is Calculating Vape Wattage Important?

  • Control over cloud production: Higher wattages typically produce larger clouds, which is essential for direct-to-lung (DTL) vapers or cloud chasers. The calculation allows them to tailor their experience to perfection.
  • Flavour control: Different e-liquids may deliver the best flavour at different wattage levels. By understanding how to adjust the wattage, you can get the most flavour out of your vape.
  • Dry hits or burnouts: Setting the wattage too high for your coil to handle can result in dry hits, giving a burnt taste. You can prevent this by understanding the correct wattage.
  • Battery life: Vaping at a high wattage drains your battery much quicker than vaping at a lower wattage. Being able to adjust your wattage correctly can help increase battery life.
