What is an e-liquid?

An e-liquid, also known as vape juice, is a fluid that's used in vaporisers to create vapour. The liquid typically contains propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG), which produce the vapour, along with nicotine and flavourings to give a wide range of taste options.

How does vaping e-liquid work?

Vaping e-liquid works through the process of heating instead of burning. The e-liquid is poured into the vape device's tank where it's absorbed by the wick. The coil heats up when activated, warming the e-liquid soaked into the wick and causing it to evaporate into vapour. This vapour can then be inhaled from the device's mouthpiece.

This process provides the user with the sensation of smoking, while inhaling vaporised e-liquid rather than burnt tobacco.

What are the different types of e-liquids?

The types of e-liquids can be primarily classified based on their PG/VG ratio, nicotine content, and flavours:

  • PG (Propylene Glycol) e-liquids offer a stronger hit in the throat and carry flavour more effectively. They work well with basic vape pens and pod systems.
  • VG (Vegetable Glycerin) e-liquids produce larger clouds and have a slightly sweeter taste. They are best suited for powerful vape devices that can generate a significant amount of heat.
  • High VG/PG ratio e-liquids are mixed to provide the balanced features of both VG and PG. They offer a balanced between rich cloud production and amazing flavour profile.
  • Nicotine salts are the salt form of nicotine used in e-liquids to deliver a smoother throat hit, even at higher nicotine strengths. Perfect for ex-smokers transitioning to vaping.
  • CBD e-liquids are infused with Cannabidiol (CBD), a compound extracted from the hemp plant.
  • Flavoured e-liquids are highly popular, ranging from traditional tobacco and menthol to fruit, dessert, or more exotic flavours. They allow the user to have a diverse and enjoyable vaping experience.

What are shortfill e-liquids?

Shortfill e-liquids are larger bottles of nicotine-free vape juice. They are typically filled to 80% capacity, leaving space for you to add your own nicotine shot if desired. This enables vapers to mix their e-liquids to their preferred nicotine strength. Shortfills have become popular due to regulations limiting the sale of larger containers of nicotine-containing e-liquid, and are an excellent choice for those looking to vape with larger devices and produce big clouds.

However, be careful when adding nicotine to shortfills to ensure the correct dose is used. Excessive nicotine can lead to harsher throat hits and potential side effects like dizziness or headaches.

What Are 50/50 e-liquids?

This type of e-liquid refers to vape juices that have an equal ratio of propylene glycol (PG) to vegetable glycerin (VG). The blend of 50% PG and 50% VG gives more balanced vaping experience, offering users with the best of both worlds. VG is known for producing thick vapour clouds, while PG is renowned for its strong delivery of flavour and creating a satisfying throat hit. A 50/50 e-liquid therefore provides a balance between flavour intensity, vapour production, and throat hit, making it suitable for most vape devices.
