What are coils?

Vape coils, or atomisers, are an integral part of any vaping device. They are the components that heat the e-liquid and turn it into vapour. Coils consist of a wrapped wire and a wicking material, usually cotton, to absorb the e-liquid. When activated, the coil heats up, vaporising the e-liquid on the wick for inhalation.

When should you replace your vape coils?

A common indication is a burnt or unpleasant taste, which usually means the coil is not functioning as it should and should be replaced. Visible gunk build-up on the coil, reduced vapour production, or leakage from your device are also signs of a coil in need of replacement. You should also replace the coils when you're changing your e-liquid flavour to avoid mixing tastes.

How to take care of coils?

Proper maintenance of vape coils can prolong their life. Regularly clean your coils by soaking them in warm water or cleaning solution and letting them air dry. Avoid dry-burning (activating the device without enough e-liquid) which can cause the coil to overheat and degrade faster.

Also, when you put in a new coil, allow it to soak in e-liquid for 10-15 minutes before use. This prevents dry-burning and extends the life of your coil.

What is the difference between MTL and DTL vaping?

MTL (Mouth-To-Lung) and DTL (Direct-To-Lung) refer to the two main methods of inhaling vapour.

  • MTL vaping is similar to traditional smoking, where you first draw the vapour into your mouth and then inhale it into your lungs. It provides a stronger throat hit, ideal for former smokers.
  • DTL vaping involves directly inhaling the vapour into your lungs. It produces more vapour, offers a smoother throat hit and is typically paired with lower nicotine strengths. It's often preferred by cloud-chasers and users of sub-ohm or high-powered devices.

What are pods?

Pods, often referred to as 'pod systems' or 'pod vapes', are compact vaping devices designed for convenience and simplicity. They feature a cartridge, known as a pod, which serves as the device's tank and holds the e-liquid.

Inside this pod is an integrated coil that heats the e-liquid and creates the vapour. Due to their user-friendly design and portability, they are a popular option among beginners.

What is the difference between a pod and a coil?

A pod serves as the device's tank that holds the e-liquid. Some pods come with the coil already built-in for convenience, facilitating easy replacement as a single unit. This allows for a simpler vaping experience, particularly suited to beginners or those seeking a more compact vape solution.

A coil is part of both traditional vape setups and pod systems. It's the element that heats up the e-liquid and turns it into vapour. In many vaping devices, especially those that are not pod systems, coils can be replaced independently of the tank.
